The Suicide Squads Fatal Mistake, and why James Gunn may not return.

The Suicide Squad, is arguably the first movie from the DC universe to do something right. Directed by the beautifully terrifying mind of James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), The Suicide Squad released to seller reviews and undeniable success. This coming after DC nuked all their previous franchises with too much studio interference. However as great as the movie was, it did make a serious mistake. One that is almost unforgivable and one that left a bitter taste in my mouth long after the movie ended.

Spoilers from this point on :

The Suicide squad saw a almost completely new team of vibrant anti heroes enter a small island that held dark secrets. Their mission was to eliminate any trace of project starfish. The end of the movie saw our surviving characters face of against Starro the conqueror. A being that can only be described as a giant Kaiju.

However before they had to face of against the Kaiju, they had to kidnap a Villain known as the thinker. Long time fans of DC will know that this villain recently had another live adaptation in the fourth season of CW's The Flash. However James Gunn made a huge mistake with this character that completely destroyed my confidence in him.

The Thinker is arguably one of the best DC villains, Because of his intellect that puts him one step ahead of everyone else. However in the movie he was represented as nothing more than idiot. He was easily kidnapped, he easily allowed The Suicide Squad to infiltrate his lab and he was easily killed by Starro. Sadly, a character of this caliber deserved more respect. Especially when being played by the amazing Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who). This makes one thing clear about James Gunn.

Killing off a legendary Character like this makes it seem like James Gunn has no intention of returning to do another Suicide Squad Movie. Any logical person would see that a Character as intelligent as The Thinker would have had backup plan and would have been able to easily escape his own crumbling lab. This would set him up as a main villain for another movie. However I believe that he didn’t survive because James Gunn had no intention of returning for a third movie. No logical person would kill of a legendary villain and an amazing talent like Peter Capaldi, all in one movie.

While one can argue that characters are supposed to die in a movie like this, by this point enough important characters were already dead. The Thinker was not a part of the Suicide Squad and didn’t have to die. If left alive he could have gone on to be the lead in his own franchise, possibly Justice League Dark. Which could have lead to a Suicide Squad VS Justice League Dark Movie. This was a incredibly missed opportunity.

This however is my only issue with The Suicide Squad. Other than this it is an absolutely amazing movie and deserves a watch. The movie is now streaming, with a spinoff involving John Cena’s Peacemaker currently being worked on. All comments and theories are welcome in the comment section. Until next time, I am signing off.

  1. Lmao, that's what you considered an "unforgivable" mistake? The most simplistic non-insulting things ever... Try again. The Suicide Squad is the best cbm to come out since Spider-Verse. It's soOo much better than Black Widow, FFH, EndGame, pretty much anything the MCUs released since Guardians of The Galaxy. 🤣
