The Truth about the most Evil Couple in South African History. Gert Van Rooyen and Joey Harhoff.
One of the Most Evil men in South African History was born in 1937. His name was Cornelius Van Rooyen, but he is famously known by his nickname, Gert Van Rooyen.
Although his earliest crimes started off as thefts, where he stole clothing and once stole a car to visit his dying mother, his later crimes would leave a scar on our Countries history.
After his early crimes Gert was sent to reform school, seemingly learning his lesson, he came out and married Aletta. He had six Children with her, during which time he earned a legitimate living running his own construction company. However it was only a matter of time before his evil impulses returned.
In 1979 Gert Kidnapped two girls, aged ten and thirteen. He took the girls to a Dam near Pretoria. There he punched one of the girls in the face and than ordered them to take off there clothes, after which he molested them.
The next day he released the girls, and was later caught by the police and sentenced to four years in prison. He only served three of those years before being released and going on to do much more evil acts.
After he was released from prison, Gert and his wife divorced. Later in 1988 he started dating Fancina Harhoff, most notably known by her nickname Joey. She would become his accomplice, allegedly luring young girls to her husband.
The couple applied to foster children, however there application was turned down. What would follow was a string of missing girls, most of which were never seen again.
There final victim, Joan Booysan. Who was sixteen years old at the time, managed to escape. This lead to the downfall of the killer couple.
After Joan Managed to escape the couple, she alerted the police of what had happened. They Immediately placed the couples home under surveillance.
Four days later They identified Gert Van Rooyen When he drove past the home in ava linked to one of the disappearances. Unfortunately they would never get the satisfaction of capturing him and the families would never get closure on what happened to their children. When Gert realized what was happening. He shot both himself and Joey.
In the home, dubbed "The House of Horror's" by the media. The police found a large number of items that linked Gert and Joey to the previous disappearances. This included the bag and class badge of one of the girls and the home keys of another.
In 1996 the house was given to the police by the bank that owned it, and they started a deep investigation. Using advanced sonar equipment they scanned the rooms of the house looking for DNA, they than took down the roof and the walls. Hoping for any clues that would lead to the missing girls.
While leads would be found later in time, they would all prove fruitless and the fate of the girls would never be revealed.
There are many theories that surround this tragedy. Unfortunately none of them can be confirmed.
One theory claims that Gert Van Rooyen was a part of a large pedophile ring operating in South Africa and that Gert killed himself to avoid exposing this ring.
However another claims that Gert and Joey were a part of a satanist group that used young girls as sacrifices to demons, and that there were many more victims than initially thought.
One of the most common theories is that the girls are buried on the beaches of Kwazulu Natal. This is where the couple vacationed the most, and some of there vacations aligned with the abductions of the Children.
Unfortunately it seems like we will never truly know what happened to them.
